Sanity or Freedom?
I have pretty bad ADHD. I sometimes take medication, but I mostly try to handle the disorder on my own.
Here's my problem: Off the medication, I'm a mess. I have trouble remembering things, I'm extremely and sometimes uncontrollably impulsive. I say things that can sometimes be hurtful without thinking about it first. Sometimes, it feels like I'm going insane. BUT, unmedicated, I can feel. I feel the connection I have with Nature. I can cry over something beautiful. I have the desire to meditate and reach enlightenment. On the medication, I tend to be cold and distant. But all the negative symptoms of the disorder go away.
I know I should probably be medicated. I know that it can really only help me. And that makes choosing between sanity and spiritual freedom very difficult.
I don't know which path to take.
I am actually doing a research paper for school kind of related to this topic. But it's more about Holistic health and mainstream medicine.
I know that for me, I used to get very bad depression, but, I haven't taken any anti-depressants in quite some time, since I've learned more about myself, the wholeness and inter-connectedness of all life, and the universe.
I know that for me, HoloSync has been a big help, I listen to specially designed CD's twice or three times a day, I do do Yoga every day, I drink a lot of water, and this is just my personal choice but I don't eat meat or do any kind of drug either (caffeine and tobacco included). All of these things have helped me to have a healthy purpose in my life, but I am still working on it more any more.
Having a healthy goal like that might be something that you could occupy your mind with. Trying to return your body and mind to a natural harmony and balance with the people, world and universe around you... could prove to be a very rewarding experience.
Your symptoms reminded me of something called an Empath, which means Empathy, which means that you emotionally feel the pain of others around you. Empaths can either be very blessed, or very tutored souls, but it is always something we can manage to handle. It depends on your environment.
There is this idea, which is that energy permeates everything, space, time, matter, conciseness, and the human experience are all made of energy. Such as, the brain, our nervous system, plants, rocks, dirt, water, air, etc, are all made of molecules, which are made of atoms, which are made of single quantum fluctuations in this massive energy field which we call the universe. All energy is touching , and spans over every possible dimension.
Using this as our core knowledge (which can be scientifically proven), we can infer the possibly of every case of miracle, phenomena, anything... even what you experience as ADHD is a manifestation of energy. This is you and your brains reaction to your environment, or sensory overload, information overload, whatever you want to call it.
Usually if you are on these types of medications you are seeing a therapist, if you don't like the one you are seeing now, shop around, tell them that you are a very spiritual person, and don't leave anything out. A good therapist will be able to help you change some things and be able to manage this without medications. A bad therapist will make you feel bad, crazy, and begin to doubt yourself. It is easy to know if your are clicking with this person or not.
But I want you to trust yourself right now, believe in yourself even if nobody else does. It might just be that you are here to help... I know that your posts have helped me!!
Taking pills is the result of a society that has no real concern about the health of the patient, as it does not care about the simple bottom line. And if we invest into the therapy that you suggest we will discover ourselves, rather than the marketable strategy that capitolism has as its priority.
I recommend a daily form of writing as well...such as a journal. Writing is also a form of therapy...spiritual therapy. And i recommend walking or even some jogging. Anything that brings our thoughts and our bodies into alignment.
Do not trust society as your solution. Combining spirituality, discovery, therapy, and exercise will open your eyes and establish trust in yourself. Common sense is the connection to your true self...your soul.
Again...common sense...that is your solution. Trust who you are. Connect with who you are. And the person who freely gives, as Shawn does here, is that person with common sense.

I've actually thought for a few years now that I might be what a friend calls a "low level empath." I don't notice it too much on a conscious level, but maybe it's very subtle. That would certainly explain why I'm so high-strung all the time.
